On May 14, about 20 volunteers and 7 staff of Safe Harbor Environmental planted nearly 15,000 stems of beach grass on the dunes at Ballston Beach. Another 15,000 stems will be planted on May 21. TNRTA is co-sponsoring this community beach restoration project, which Safe Harbor Environmental Services of Wellfleet is leading, joined by other co-sponsors - the Truro Conservation Commission, Town of Truro Beach Commission, Town of Truro Department of Public Works, Cape Cod National Seashore, and the Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore. TNRTA and its member seasonal residents have made substantial donations to the project, contributing about 75% of the revenue raised to date. Many year-round residents from Truro have given financial and volunteer support as well. Friends of the CCNS provided financial support and the bulk of volunteer boots on the ground to this effort, and Mac’s Seafood made a substantial gift as well.
After learning that no supplies of the needed beach grass could be found on the entire East Coast, TNRTA also located the 30,000 stems of beach grass needed for the project, negotiated a bulk rate for purchasing and shipping, and contacted TNRTA members about volunteering and donating to the Ballston Beach Barrier Dune Restoration Project. This effort will implement rapid, emergency steps to protect the freshwater head of the Pamet River from salt water “overwashes” that increasingly threaten this fragile habitat. This innovative project will enable natural forces to rebuild the dune barriers over the next few years based upon the work done this May. For more info go to www.safeharborenv.com.
